Metro art contest

In 2024, I participated in Astral's art contest in partnership with Transgesco for the STM. The project was to create a 70"W by 20.675"H artwork for one of the billboards in the Berri-UQÀM metro station, around the theme "the underground voyage".

Concept

With the theme in mind, I wanted to show Montreal's diversity through its public transport. The idea was to tell the journey of the underground, showing the diversity of people not just in backgrounds but also in stages of life, relationships, and bodies. I also wanted to highlight the various things that make the STM so accessible like the escalators and elevators.

Colors

Originally, I wanted to have a strong monochrome color palette to highlight the STM's iconic blue. However through my experimentations, I realized that the images were stronger pieces alone than when put into one composition. The blue made the overall image too confusing to read and all the details I added seemed to get lost.

I opted for a more colorful palette to not only add life to the image, but also make each element stand out.

Diversity

Each section of the illustration is packed with details to reflect the vast diversity of Montreal. For example I tried to represent as many different personalities as I could of people who use the metro. There's a guide dog, a well-dressed lady, a student, a worker, and an older couple. Diversity and representation is important as it reflects what makes Montreal so special. I also wanted to represent the different resources offered to people with disabilities, highlighting the STM's efforts to make the underground more accessible.
